DT Weekend cover

Editor’s Note

How do you spend your evenings? My evening is the day’s jewel. Calamity disappears as I pass the late hours together with myself, unencumbered with the demands of daytime. Between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. when the light is seeping out of the afternoon, my legs and thoughts wander.

Professors’ Picks: Lena Khor

Each week a professor gives us the lowdown on their top five albums, books or movies that have shape

Lena Khor, Instructor of English literature, rhetoric and writing. My guess is that you may be more interested in eating food than reading about it. But our practices of eating deeply affect the well-being of our local communities and global environment.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Pottery Barn

It may be cliché to dub all boys messy and careless ogres while declaring all ladies pretty in pink, but lets face it — most would say we can tell a lot about a person, even usually identify their gender, from a glance around their homes.

Rhizome Collective

Secret Book Garden in East Austin

In a small room in the northeast corner of the Rhizome Collective, a renovated warehouse surrounded by dense foliage and inhabited by people who consider the term “radical” the highest form of praise, a cramped library stands apart from the rest of the building. Handwritten notes and instructions speckle the walls and tables.

What’s in the Can? DTW Investigates

It’s 3 a.m., and you’ve just started studying for the midterm from hell. You’ve already tried gulping down a Diet Coke or two, and at this point, sleep equals failure. You might have studied before watching re-runs of The Office and uploading pics to Facebook, but this is no time for regrets. 1 comment

Simple Sisters

The Simple Sisters

Screw the Jester poster sale — unless of course you want to pay too much for that lame movie poster that everyone’s 13-year-old sister already has. There are far more interesting ways to spruce up your room, and they don’t have to cost you a fortune.

Ramadan: Students Fasting & Feasting

If you’ve ever watched the classroom clock in anticipation of the lunch hour, imagine that feeling all day, every day, for a month. Throughout September, Muslim students are fasting in observance of Ramadan in exactly this way. “Many people believe we are suffering during this time, but in reality, that is not our experience,” said Kadir Nagac, president of the Islamic Dialogue Student Association.

Money Matters: Ivy League Worth the Green?

Everyone knows that you’ve got to spend money to make money, right? This week, The New York Sun reported that the costs of attending Columbia University and NYU (including housing) have crested $50,000 a year. For a two-year master’s program, you (or your parents) are looking at cutting a check for 100,000 clams, more than twice what you might expect to spend on a comparable program here in Austin. 2 comments

Dreamers & Schemers: Tarts of TV

In the midst of quizzes, studying and working, I like to loaf. When I loaf, I like to watch afternoon TV. When the clock hits noon and I realize I forgot to do my homework anyway, daytime talk shows and public access channels offer me the simple solace I need to forget just how busy life is outside my soft couch cushions.

Sweaty Much?

Sure, sweat can be a good thing. It always nice to know your body’s largest organ is there and ready to react to the scorching heat, to quickly spit out giant droplets of impure toxins to cool your internal system off but there is no denying that this mysterious miracle of the integumentary system can tend to be a bit out of control, over-excited and downright embarrassing.
