Most of us will be heading down to Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend with a ticket in one hand and list of bands in the other. Don’t count on music being your only entertainment, though.

The people behind the festival have put up more activities and booths to add to the musical attraction.

Graham Williams and the Alamo Drafthouse founded Fun Fun Fun Fest in 2006 as a small event to showcase emerging bands. But when all the venues in Austin had been booked, the event moved to Waterloo Park. As more bands hitched on, the event expanded into what it is today.

“It started as sort of an accident,” Williams said. “I didn’t plan for a festival ... it spread into something larger as more and more bands added on. The fest was born, and the rest is a brief history so far.”

After you catch performances from the bands of your choice, have fun with the extracurriculars at the fest. Watch for stand up comedy; a dunk tank; vendors selling food, clothes, haircuts, records, band merchandise and silk-screen posters; a make-your-own T-shirt setup; and, of course, the mechanical bull.

Now in its third year, a variety of music scenes will be represented, from classic rock to hip hop, from electronica to metal. And while this weekend’s trysts to Waterloo may be mostly music-related, everyone should listen in and get the most from the diverse range of sounds coming to Austin.
