Fans of indie pop-rock band Of Montreal are in for a special surprise. James Husband, the multi-instrumentalist of the group previously known as James Huggins, will be performing his solo act at Fun Fun Fun Fest.
Husband changed his pen name from Higgins to Husband not only because they sound similar, but for more literary appeal.
“I was reading something, and I came across the name Husband, and I thought what a cool name to have,” he said. “Above all, many people do not believe that my last name is Huggins, so changing to Husband gave it a sense of intellectual flair.”
Husband’s project has been in development since 1996, when bandmate and front man Kevin Barnes gave him the final push to start recording his personal tracks. The performance will include an entire new set of songs from his album set to be released later in the year.
Husband cited The Beatles and Guided by Voices as two major inspirations for Of Montreal, whose latest album, Skeletal Lamping, was one of the top selling and critically acclaimed albums of 2008.
“Of Montreal has been together for many years, so our sound has evolved from album to album,” Husband said.
When Of Montreal isn’t in a recording studio or on tour, Husband insisted that they are a pretty chill group of guys. He and his other band mates are total television junkies with favorite shows like Mad Men, The Office, Flight of the Concords and, James’s personal favorite, Summer Heights High.
“You have to treat every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday as if it was a Friday night,” Husband said. “Performing and attending various parties and press events is exhausting. So when we have free time, we are all pretty much homebodies.“
