DT weekend: You’re josh [aka J2k] of Flosstradamus’s sister — do you guys have the same kind of concepts when it comes to making music, or are you guys different?
Melissa Young: We’re similar for sure, but we have different ideas on what sounds cool. For the most part, yeah, he’s a great ally to have and a great person to be like ‘does this sound good?’
DTW: Tell me about your new album, Ultraviolet.
MY: Well, I mean it’s been a long time in the making and it’s finally as I like it. There’s no part of it where it’s like ‘I wish I could change that.’ We made sure we were happy and everybody was on the level about it.
DTW: I know that some of the tracks were produced by Rusko, The Count and Sinden and Steve Angello — that’s a really diverse mix of genres. I know the media typically calls you a rapper and singer — I’m curious what you think about electronic music considering so many amazing artists in the field helped produce your work.
MY: I’m so honored to have been working with so many cool people, really talented guys. It’s, you know, kind of like a dream come true — I could have never predicted it.
DTW: It seems like more and more this year you’re seeing artists that were once confined to their genre expanding out and experimenting with different sounds — was this something you had in mind while you were making Ultraviolet, or was it a coincidence?
MY: You can’t put any labels on me, man! [laughs] I think of myself as an electronic hip hop artist. It’s a new genre; I feel like my album is going to be that genre-defining record.
DTW: What are your plans while you’re in Austin?
MY: Definitely going to Manuels on Third and Congress, the restaurant with the big red sign. Pretty great food. The Lamar Bridge. And we go to Stubb’s, of course. What else could we do, to hang out with our friends? I’ve only been there for South by Southwest.
DTW: You should check out Barton Springs, if it’s warm enough. Mount Bonnell has some really great views of the city, too. Hit up some of the shops on South Congress and shop, if you’re into that kind of thing.
MY: Yeah! Sounds good.
