Longhorns in Thursday's Olympic action

- Former Longhorn Ian Crocker advanced to the semifinals of the 100-meter butterfly, placing third in his heat with a time of 51.95 seconds. Senior Garrett Weber-Gale qualified for the semifinals of the 50 freestyle, placing third in his heat with a time of 21.95 seconds.

- Junior Susana Escobar, representing Mexico, won her heat of the 800 freestyle preliminaries. Her time of 8 minutes, 33.51 seconds places her 18th overall heading into the semifinals.

- Texas volunteer assistant swimming coach Kirsty Coventry, representing Zimbabwe, won the preliminaries in the 200 backstroke and advanced to the semifinals after breaking an Olympic record with a 2:06.76 time. Coventry is the reigning Olympic gold medalist in that event. Texas swimming coach Kim Brackin is the head coach for Zimbabwe.

- Incoming UT freshman Kathleen Hersey placed eighth overall Thursday morning in the 200 butterfly. Incoming UT transfer junior Scott Spann placed sixth in the finals of the 200 breaststroke on Thursday morning. Former Longhorn Aaron Peirsol earned another spot in an Olympic final, qualifying for the semifinals of the 200 backstroke. Peirsol is seeded first and is the co-world record holder.
