Brett Hodges, QB
After a 21-20 comeback victory over Marshall last Sunday, Central Florida quarterback Brett Hodges has led the Knights to back-to-back wins for the first time all season. More importantly, the Wake Forest transfer has positioned the 5-3 Knights to advance back into bowl contention after last year’s disappointing 4-8 finish. In last week’s narrow win over Marshall, the senior from Winter Springs, Fla., had the best overall performance of his college career, throwing for 342 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Though Hodges has lacked accuracy at times, completing just 57 percent of his passes on the season, he has led the Knights to three consecutive conference wins after beginning the year off 0-2.
Rocky Ross, WR
Hodges’ favorite target is 6-foot-2-inch fifth-year senior Rocky Ross. Granted a medical redshirt after breaking his collar bone last year, the wide receiver from Jacksonville, Fla., had a season-high six receptions last week against Marshall for 76 yards and a touchdown. Ross, the Knights’ leader in receptions and receiving touchdowns this season, will face his toughest test yet, against a Longhorn defense that had four interceptions last week against Oklahoma State.
Brynn Harvey, RB
Voted to the All Conference USA Freshman Team last season after leading the Knights in carries and rushing yards, sophomore running back Brynn Harvey will be counted on to run efficiently against an exceptional Texas defensive front. So far this season, the 6-foot-1-inch back from Largo, Fla., has rushed for 679 yards and seven touchdowns. If Central Florida is able to stay on the field against one of the top defenses in the nation, Harvey could rack up the yards, as he did against Memphis earlier this season with 42 carries for 219 yards, and effectively pave the way for Hodges to catch the hot-handed Longhorn secondary off-guard.
