Texas sprinters shine at US championships, Hooker falls just short
Over the weekend, the UT women’s team was well represented at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Oregon.
Senior Alex Anderson and former Longhorn Marshavet Hooker flew into the next round of competition with two wind-aided sub-11-second times in the 100-meter dash. They finished fifth and fourth, respectively, in the finals.
“It felt good out there today, just tried to execute and stay smooth,” Anderson said after her prelims race. “[I’m] just competing as well as I can out there.”
But for Hooker’s sister, junior high jumper Destinee Hooker, postseason luck faded away. Destinee finished fourth at the national meet, failing to qualify by one place.
Michelle Carter secured her ticket to Berlin with a first place throw of 59 feet, 2 inches in the shot put. Junior Jordyn Brown finished in 11th place in the event.
Incoming freshman Chalonda Goodman finished first in the 100 and second in the 200.
“I’m so excited right now,” Goodman said. “This is unbelievable. I’m just so excited to make the junior team.”
Olympian Sanya Richards earned her fifth national 400-meter run title on Day 3 with a time of 50.05 seconds.
Hardee wins decathlon, future Horn sets high school record
This past weekend, track and field athletes from all across the country flocked to the hallowed grounds of Hayward Field at the University of Oregon for the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Included in that flock of athletes were 11 current, former and future Longhorns, all vying for a chance to compete in Berlin at the World Track and Field Championships, or, for the soon-to-be Longhorn Marquise Goodwin, the 2009 Pan American Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Tevan Everett finished fifth in 800-meter run final on Sunday, while former Longhorns Leo Manzano and Darren Brown took second and 11th place, respectively, in the 1500-meter run finals. Jake Morse advanced with the 10th fastest time in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Former Longhorn Trey Hardee finished the first half of the decathlon in first place with 4,337 points.
The following day, Hardee continued his great performance from day one to lock up a first-place finish and a trip to Berlin. Hardee finished the decathlon with 8,261 total points, nearly 200 points more than the second place finisher.
In the shot put for the junior division, freshman Jacob Thormaehlen finished in third place with a throw of 64 feet, 5 inches. Despite the top-three finish, Thormaehlen failed to qualify for the Junior National Team.
Day 3 was all about the burnt orange youngsters. Leading the way for Longhorns was Goodwin.
On Saturday, Goodwin set a new national high school record with a fifth-place finish in the long jump. But this fifth-place finish for the 18-year old was in the senior division, not the junior division. His jump of 26 feet, 10 inches just beat the old record which stood for 20 years. Goodwin’s record-setting jump comes after he had already won the junior division title.
