After three impressive wins this weekend at the World Vision Classic, the University of Texas women’s basketball team can thank their bench for the large contributions it made during the course of the games in consecutive nights against Dayton and St. Mary’s, and Monday’s game against No. 25 Old Dominion.
During Saturday’s opening-round contest against the Dayton Flyers, the Longhorns’ bench outscored Dayton’s bench by a margin of 37-8.
On Sunday, Texas actually lost the bench battle against St. Mary’s, but still managed to tally 46 points in a 110-76 rout.
Monday’s contest was much of the same for the Longhorns as their bench stepped up again, registering 33 points, while the Lady Monarchs’ bench accounted for only nine, in a game that turned out to be a blowout of its own.
Head coach Gail Goestenkors preached all weekend about how impressed she was with her role players and how important it was for them to help this team.
“Anybody on our bench could be starting for us,” Goestenkors said. “Last year we didn’t have the depth and at times we coasted. There is no coasting anymore, and there is a lot of confidence coming off our bench.”
Texas will need the same confidence and effort this Thursday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
“We played them at their place last year and we know they are a scrappy team,” Goestenkors said. “We are looking forward to getting out on the floor and proving ourselves once again.”
