The University Co-operative Society hosted the seventh annual George H. Mitchell Awards ceremony on Wednesday to announce the 2009 winners.
These awards are given to nine finalists who demonstrate scholarly or creative achievement by completing a thesis, research project, creative or artistic work. The University’s Office of the Provost selects the student nominees for this award.
In order to qualify for an award, student nominees must be a junior or senior currently enrolled at the University. If not, the nominees must have received their undergraduate degree in December of the previous year.
The award money is divided into different amounts. Five students receive awards of $2,000 each, three students receive awards of $5,000 each, and one student is awarded the grand prize of $20,000.
Acuna also discussed the variety of academic fields that the nominees can be enrolled in to become eligible for the award, which includes science and technology, social sciences, humanities and the arts.
“[The Provost Office] looks at everything,” he said. “Each area of study has a standard for a specific criteria.”
